Kim's Favorite Places to Cool Off
When the summer heat really settles in, we're always looking for ways to stay active while staying cool. Of course, we're lucky to have beautiful South Shore beaches close to home, but over the years we've also discovered some amazing ponds, waterfalls, swimming holes, and water parks that have become family favorites.
Before you head out, don't forget to pack a few water toys. A simple dive toy, reusable water balloon, or floating game can turn a fun day into one your kids will remember all summer long.
Brownstone Adventure Sports Park: Portland, Connecticut
If your family loves adventure, this is one of our favorite summer day trips. Spend the day swimming, jumping into the water, climbing inflatable obstacle courses, ziplining, paddleboarding, and kayaking. It's the perfect destination for older kids and adventurous families.
Pack This: Water shoes, reusable water balloons, dive toys and waterproof games.
Houghton's Pond: Milton, Massachusetts
One of our favorite local spots after a morning hike at the Blue Hills. The calm swimming area makes it a great place to cool off before enjoying a picnic lunch.
Pack This: Beach buckets, floating toys and card games for the picnic table.
Diana's Bath: North Conway, New Hampshire
This was one of my boys' favorite places when they were younger. The shallow pools, smooth rocks, and gentle waterfalls make it a wonderful place for kids to splash, explore, and spend hours outside.
Pack This: Water shoes, waterproof explorer kits and nature journals.
Walden Pond: Concord, Massachusetts
One of our favorite spots for a relaxing summer afternoon. Bring lunch, spend time swimming, and enjoy a picnic surrounded by beautiful scenery.
Pack This: Floating toys, beach games and travel-sized crafts for after swimming.
Nickerson State Park: Brewster, Massachusetts
One of the best places to combine biking and swimming. Ride the Cape Cod Rail Trail, then cool off in one of the freshwater ponds before heading home.
Pack This: Dive toys, frisbees and outdoor games.
Jackson Falls: Jackson, New Hampshire
A beautiful family hike that ends with natural pools perfect for cooling off on a hot day. It's one of those hidden gems that always feels like an adventure.
Pack This: Nature scavenger hunt cards, waterproof toys and bug catchers.
